Interesting Times in Nova Scotia
Ready to vote? Nova Scotia's minority Tory government falls
I was born in NS and my daughter still lives there. It will be interesting to see how this ends up. Personally, I am pulling for Darrel Dexter and the NDP. I knew him briefly many years ago and he always struck me as an intelligent and pragmatic man.
Nova Scotia's opposition MLAs voted down a finance bill Monday, prompting the fall of the minority Progressive Conservative government and setting the stage for an election.
Premier Rodney MacDonald said he plans to meet with Lt.-Gov. Mayann Francis on Tuesday to ask her to dissolve the legislature. Tradition dictates she will grant his request to head to the polls on June 9.
The last provincial election was in June 2006.
The MacDonald government collapsed over its plan to spend $260 million instead of putting it toward the province's $12-billion debt, as is required by law.

WATBism
Hullabaloo
Yet another chapter in the ongoing saga of WATBism among the GOP.
Can I just say what a bunch of whining little wimps these Republicans all are? They love to present themselves as stoic, manly warriors, loving heir country above all else, willing to lay down their lives for it.
Until something happens they don't like and then they want to blow the thing up.

The Problem with Short Term Thinking
Analysis: What's ahead for Obama in the next 100 days - CNN.com
A large part of what is wrong with this country is that the time horizon for too many is too short. The problem is that it means that you find solutions that look good at the moment but that are substantially less than the best solution. In the world of optimization this is known as finding local maxima rather than a truly optimal solution.
Take a look at this graphic* and hopefully you will see what I mean.

Imagine that you walking around that graph on a foggy day (yeah I know). You get to the top of the little hill and in every direction you look you see that it is downhill. When the fog lifts, then you will see that you are still in the foothills.
If we stay in the 100 day (or fiscal quarter .. odd how close in length they are) fog then I fear that we will never become as great a nation as we could be. I know that I am not satisfied with that. Are you?

The second 100 days will be a critical test of Obama's power in getting key legislative priorities -- such as economic recovery, health care, energy and immigration -- passed.

Today's Game ...
Guess who said this.
When President-elect Obama quoted Abraham Lincoln on the night of his election, he was acknowledging the transcendent qualities of vision and leadership that are always present, but often overlooked and neglected by pettiness, partisanship and petulance. As president, I believe Barack Obama can help lift us out of a narrow view of America into the ultimate vision of an America where, if you're born to be a mezzo-soprano or a master carpenter, nothing stands in your way of realizing your God-given potential.via Balloon Juice

BCS vs. playoff debate comes to Capitol Hill - CNN.com
The economy is still in a freefall, there is apparently the possibility that public employee pension funds are being robbed blind by so-called placement agents and there are any number of other actually important things that a House subcommittee on Commerce could be dealing with. I don't care that it only took a morning, this is shit that just doesn't need to be done right now.
And politicians wonder why so many people think they live in their own little world.
College football's perennial armchair-quarterback argument over the need for a clear-cut national champion came to Capitol Hill Friday.
The House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection held a hearing to dissect the Bowl Championship Series, asking whether the model needs to be tweaked, overhauled or done away with altogether.
Four witnesses testified at the morning hearing, including championship series coordinator John Swofford and Alamo Bowl President Derrick Fox; both of whom defended the current system, though Fox conceded that "no system is perfect and the Bowl Championship Series is not perfect.

To which I reply with this graphic from a recent Gallup Poll

I am glad to see that the future of the GOP is so bright.

Asked about the coverage she’s been getting for the GOP, McCain said she feels like she’s “speaking out for a lot of young people that don’t feel spoken for.”
